mornings are simple here: a breakfast of eggs and sometimes cereal and always french press coffee (currently dogwood). most mornings jp takes care of the animals, and usually with ramona putzing about in the yard. but mornings –my favorite mornings– are when the three of us traipse out there together to say hello to violet & lacey, chickens 1, 2, & 3, and the duck couple (one of them now obviously a male).
we pet the ladies. we toss grain. we fill the manger. we collect eggs. we replenish the waters. we sit on the logs and take in the simplicity of it all.

please welcome a new sponsor of A Denver Home Companion, SecondLove, a thriftique in the highland square neighborhood of denver! the shop, run by two sisters, angie & katie, is a boutique selling gently-used, well-curated womens, baby, and mens clothes, as well as home goods. it’s definitely my new favorite store and i essentially got my entire winter wardrobe there in one visit.
SecondLove buys clothes on the first sunday of every month. the next one is coming up soon, this sunday, january 6. bring your clothes (in washed and good condition) to the back of the store where katie and/or angie will sort through them and take what is a good fit for the store. based on the prices they set to resell your goods, they offer 30% cash or 50% trade of total value (i usually take the trade bc i really think the best things in life are “free” or at least swapped).
i know it can be a little weird at first to have someone sift through your clothes and saying “yay” or “nay” — it definitely took a couple of trips to various resale shops for me to let go and not take anything personally. but either way, the sisters are SO gracious and will gladly and kindly explain why or why not they have chosen an item. the prices they offer are incredibly fair.
and even if you don’t have clothes to sell (you clotheshorse, you) stop in and take a look at their racks as well as their baby, maternity, and new mens section. there’s also a table of gorgeous jewelry handmade by local artists.
SecondLove is located at 3440 w 32nd ave in the highland square neighborhood of denver. you can also follow them on facebook for updates about trunk shows and buying dates or on pinterest for insights into where they get their fashion inspiration. they are open sunday and monday, 11:00 until 5:00 and on tuesday through saturday, 10:30 until 6:30.
a friend loaned us an amazing peacock halloween costume for ramona this year. the photos speak for themselves: she would have nothing to do with it. which is too bad bc we were both going to be peacocks, what with the peacock feather headbands i had DIY’d for the both of us for her pink and gold first birthday (which she also refused to wear).
so we improvised. i went to her wardrobe and picked out the silliest things she owns — a thrifted faux fur stole and a no-sew ribbon and tulle tutu i made. and whaddyaknow? she ended up being a mini edith (either one!) from grey gardens. i think she pulled off the old-crazy-lady look quite well. we wore these get-ups to this past weekend’s highland haunt in lohi denver.
tonight we think we’re trick-or-treating in congress park, a neighborhood i hear has the best candy output in denver. we only think we may go because ramona has been going to bed at 6:00 each night and who knows if she’ll stay awake and happy enough to make the rounds. fine by us. in that case we’ll sit at home and get around to carving our pumpkins and roasting pumpkin seeds.
what are you doing for halloween tonight?

our new favorite sweet shop. humble pie is located at 3rd & elati in the baker neighborhood of denver. come for the pie and stay for the cozy decor and friendly staff. tamara, proprietor and pie slinger, has put a lot of love and thoughtful touches into this place. her pies kick some serious tastebud ass.
if all that wasn’t enough, this store has definite denver love: they also serve huckleberry roasters coffee and has touches of mountain vs plains throughout the art on the walls and branding (the artist, paul michel, is also a pie slinger extraordinaire. pictured above).
jp and i had the breakfast burrito quiche, the veggie quiche, and the chocolate chess pie. OMG.
this is, believe it or not, not a sponsored post.

last week jp was battling a stomach bug so headed to the zoo to give him some quiet space and us some fresh air.
she loves finding puddles and stomping her little feet in them. the sea lion caught her eye and she stood on the ledge patiently waiting for it to swim past over and over. and that little black and white bird! the two of them stayed there for a handful of minutes (a long time in toddler-time) and talked to each other and mirrored one another and ran back and forth together. finally she noticed me standing a little bit away and ran over to grab my hand to make sure i wouldn’t miss out on these flirtations with the little bird (this hand-holding thing is new and just kills me every time!).
